World featherweight title contender, who announced he was gay last year, pops question to partner José Manuel on Facebook
The boxer Orlando Cruz has proposed to his partner, after recently announcing he was gay.
The Puerto Rican featherweight fighter delighted Facebook followers with a video post in which he proposed to his long-term boyfriend, José Manuel.
Speaking in Spanish, Cruz said: "Through the ups and downs we've had, you've always been there for your number, as one says.
"I'm a little bit nervous, but that aside, I want to tell you and share with your friends and my friends that if you want to marry me?
"I want to share my life with you and want to be with you always, and support you 100%, and you support me 100%. I like you a lot, I love you and I look forward to your answer."
Cruz didn't have to wait long. Manuel accepted his proposal with an emotional video of his own, posted on the social networking site.
"I want to tell you, yes, I do accept and would like to marry you, because I love you," he replied tearily.
"I'm a bit emotional. I didn't expect … to find your proposal … posted to Facebook," he adds with a shrug. Both videos have since been removed from Facebook.
Pedro Julio Serrano, spokesman for the US-based National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, said he will serve as the godfather at the couple's wedding.
Cruz became the first openly gay professional boxer when he made headlines last October with his public announcement that he is a "proud gay man".
Cruz is preparing to fight for the world featherweight title on October, when he will meet Orlando Salido in Las Vegas. Reported by guardian.co.uk 3 days ago.
