Two arborists from Backridge Tree Service make an effort to contribute to the local community.

Mary Esther, Florida (PRWEB) December 16, 2014

Public service is very important to Backridge Tree Service, and giving back to the community is part of their business model. Certified Arborist and Backridge Tree Service President Rob Calley carried on that tradition by volunteering at a local middle school as a science fair judge on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Calley judged plant science for sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

"These kids have really put in a great effort and their projects are a pleasure to judge,” said Calley. “You can really appreciate how much hard work they put in."

Certified Arborist Travis Morales is also contributing to the local community. He has been invited by North American Training Solutions (NATS) to teach at a three-day climbing/safety course in Orlando on Dec. 10, 11 and 12.

NATS is one of the leading arboricultural training groups in the nation and only a very select, handpicked few get the opportunity to work for them. Morales’ selection reflects great credit upon him, Backridge Tree Service, and the greater Fort Walton Beach area.

"I am so incredibly proud of Travis,” said Calley. “He has worked his tail off for years, and to be recognized by such a renowned outfit like NATS is beyond words."

Tech Companies Make Holiday Shopping Easier Than Ever Watch VideoLet's face it: The holidays are only getting closer. But if you don't want to resort to measures like these to finish off your shopping list ...

*"One of my most proven shopping methods is reverse psychology … or is it?" *a Black Friday shopper in a Target commercial says.

… new features from several major tech companies might have you covered.

First off, if you're looking for something a little more one-of-a-kind, Amazon's new "Make an Offer" feature might be the way to go. (Video via WXFT)

Rolled out Tuesday, the new feature allows shoppers to make a counteroffer — basically haggle — with a seller for a lower price.

Currently, the option is only available on about 150,000 sports and entertainment collectibles, coins and fine art items — and the seller has three days to accept or reject a bid.

Hmm. "Make an Offer." Why does that sound familiar?

Next up, if you've ditched the wallet for Apple Pay, you now have a few more places to pay with your smartphone.

Banks like SunTrust and Commerce Bank, Staples, and even the Amway Center — where the Orlando Magic play — will accept Apple Pay at concession stands.

According to The New York Times, the service now backs the cards that make up about 90 percent of credit card purchases in the U.S.

If you've managed to cross every name off your list and you just want to sit down for a meal with friends, Google can now help you avoid the dreaded splitting of the bill.

With the iOS version of the app, users can divide their check as many ways as needed — among dinner company who happen to be in their contacts.

According to Engadget, those guests can still decline their portion of the bill, though, so be sure you don't get stuck with it.

Finally, if after all of that you're still struggling to get that last-minute item, Amazon has one more way to help you out. (Video via ABC)

These Cities Might Be Seeing More Power Outages, Thanks To Climate Change

How likely is it that climate change will leave your city in the dark? Researchers at Johns Hopkins University asked just this question, analyzing which cities will be more likely to suffer from hurricane-related power outages in the future.

Using historical data and a range of potential future storm scenarios, researchers created a computer model to predict which cities will likely see the greatest increases in power outage risk. Seth Guikema, associate professor at Johns Hopkins, said in a press release that the information will be able to help cities make plans now to reinforce their systems.

"If I’m mayor of Miami, we know about hurricanes, we know about outages and our system has been adapted for it," Guikema said. "But if I’m mayor of Philadelphia, I might say, 'Whoa, we need to be doing more about this.'"

Scientists are uncertain exactly how climate change will affect hurricanes of the future, but the team examined a range of potential impacts of changes in frequency, intensity and location to make their predictions.

"The range of results demonstrates the sensitivity of the U.S. power system to changes in storm behavior," Guikema said. “Infrastructure providers and emergency managers need to plan for hurricanes in a long-term manner and that planning has to take climate change into account.”

The team ranked the top ten cities that will likely see the greatest increase in power outage risk from hurricanes. Scroll down to see if your city was unlucky enough to make the cut!

Moms Demand Action Claims New Firearm Attraction Disrupts Orlando 'Holy Land' Fresh off PR losses to Kroger, Fred Meyer, and Harris Teeter, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is now targeting "Machine Gun Alley"--claiming the new family-oriented shooting venue will disrupt "Holy Land" in Orlando.

Machine Gun Alley is set to open this weekend. It is housed in a "13,000-square-foot-facility" where individuals can rent and shoot machine guns or take part in simulated Wild West shootouts. The machine guns can also be rented by parents and their children "as young as 13," as long as the parents give permission.

Tampa Bay's 10 News reports that adults and children alike are "accompanied by a trained instructor" at all times.

Moms Demand Action's Lucia Kay McBath denounced the opening of Machine Gun Alley, saying, "You've got Holy Land right there in Orlando. You've got Disney World, and Epcot. All places for family fun where they should feel protected."

But Machine Gun Alley is not changing a thing. General Manager Bruce Nierenberg said the facility is about celebrating "American life," and he pointed out that guns were integral to "how we gained our freedom."

HNTB Corporation Ready for Its Next 100 Years

The infrastructure firm has celebrated its centennial throughout 2014 and sees continued growth opportunities for 2015.

(PRWEB) December 17, 2014

“For more than a century now, HNTB Corporation has helped create infrastructure that best meets the unique needs of our clients and the communities where we live and work,” said Rob Slimp, CEO. “That commitment has never been stronger.”

Recognizing its 100th birthday last January was just the beginning of a year-long celebration, which has since included a host of community service programs and moving forward on many high-profile infrastructure projects across the United States.

“We are proud of the fact that for 100 years our employees have supported their hometowns through professional, civic and personal contributions,” Slimp said. “And we will continue to do so long into the future.”

Investing in the community: Giving back
Having committed to a target of at least 100 hours of community service throughout 2014 to recognize the firm’s 100 years of existence, and exceeding that target, HNTB volunteers from dozens of offices around the country set to work early and often by actively participating in regional events sponsored by professional organizations and other community organizations, such as Junior Achievement, the United Way and Christmas in October.

Many events have focused on youth education, disaster recovery and hunger relief. Examples include:· Engineers from the firm’s Dallas area offices regularly team up with students at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center’s School of Science and Engineering to introduce them to the Architectural, Engineering and Planning industry. This is accomplished through hands-on activities and events, integrating academic and workplace activities that involve all aspects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. One real-life project nearly 20 students worked on with HNTB engineers was the Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s South Oak Cliff Blue Line Extension. Some of the students’ recommendations may be used in the actual design of a new rail station.

· Last spring, professionals from the firm’s Kansas City office participated in the Youth Minority Engineering Night, hosted by the National Society of Black Engineer’s at the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri. A presentation and activity introduced civil engineering to high school students from inner city schools. Students also learned about electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science.

· Mindful of the continuing impact of Superstorm Sandy on residents of New York City’s coastal neighborhoods and the New Jersey’s coastal communities, HNTB professionals helped rebuild the lives of people impacted by this devastating event, partnerships with the New York City Office of Sandy Recovery Services and Habitat for Humanity chapters in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, New Jersey. Working with experienced home construction supervisors, HNTB teams have worked on projects that included preparatory and structural work required prior to raising a house that is to be completely rebuilt, installing kitchen cabinets, rebuilding stairs and putting the finishing touches on a major rehab of damaged homes.

· Last May, HNTB employees from Virginia and the District of Columbia participated in a day-long “Work-a-Thon” with Hands On DC, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the physical condition of public schools in Washington, D.C. The HNTB team designed and constructed 75-by-3 foot raised planter box for the Francis Stevens Education Campus in Foggy Bottom. The garden now grows vegetables and flowers for the school and serves as an educational tool for science classes.
· In Orlando, with Keep Orlando Beautiful, HNTB employees led a cleanup in November of Lake Lorna Doone Park adjacent to the HNTB-designed Citrus Bowl reconstruction project.

· HNTB’s Chicago office volunteers worked as mentors with a group of 15 local students on a library rehabilitation project. Additional Chicago-area projects included helping students plan cities, and introducing 9-to-13-year-old-girls to engineering and transportation careers.

· On Dec. 13, HNTB volunteers honored fallen military service members by participating in the Wreaths Across America event at Arlington National Cemetery, one of many wreath laying ceremonies nationwide to recognize the ultimate sacrifice made by so many on our behalf. HNTB also is providing architectural and engineering services for the cemetery’s southern expansion.

Investing in infrastructure: HNTB’s winning ways
HNTB’s next 100 years also are beginning to take shape.

The firm is moving forward by contributing to some of the biggest, most complex transportation infrastructure projects currently under way. The firm continues to help transform American transportation and infrastructure, including the new Sixth Street Bridge in Los Angeles; the Kosciuszko Bridge in New York; the LYNX Blue Line light rail extension in Charlotte, N.C.; the Interstate 95 Express Lanes in Florida, and the new Levi’s Stadium for the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, Calif.

Major project wins in 2014 included selection as the general engineering consultant to the North Texas Tollway Authority, program manager for the study of a PATH extension to Newark Liberty International Airport for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, the designer of the Interstate 94 Downtown Reconstruction project in Detroit for the Michigan Department of Transportation, managing Georgia Commute Options, an innovative transportation demand management program, for the Georgia Department of Transportation, and as the designer of the Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium improvement project, among others.

HNTB employs nearly 3,700 people nationwide and consistently ranks as the No. 1 consultant to departments of transportation and toll authorities nationwide, serving as the general engineering consultant to more tolling agencies than any other firm.

About HNTB
HNTB Corporation is an employee-owned infrastructure firm serving public and private owners and contractors. The SEM snapshot for the finance sector focuses on the clicks-versus-spend trade-off between the three lending giants.

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) December 17, 2014

The Search Monitor, the leader in precision ad intelligence for marketers and affiliate managers, today released its newest SEM snapshot for the financial sector.

The Search Monitor used its ad intelligence platform to dive into recent SEM click and spend activity of lending companies, with a specific focus on the comparison between LendingTree, NetCredit, and Quicken Loans.

“It’s always interesting to see how financial advertisers apply their massive budgets to generate clicks,” explained The Search Monitor’s CEO, Lori Weiman. “Our financial snapshot revealed an opportunity for Quicken Loans to study the performance of LendingTree and NetCredit to try to close the CPC gap.”

The Search Monitor released this executive summary of its findings:· Clicks: LendingTree generated the most clicks during the time period analyzed. Quicken Loans, meanwhile, generated fewer than two-thirds of LendingTree’s number.
· Spend: When it came to the amount of spend required to generate these clicks, LendingTree and NetCredit spent between $3 and $6 million, while Quicken Loans spent between $6 and $9 million.
· Trade-off: While The Search Monitor typically expects spend to increase in line with clicks generated, LendingTree and NetCredit were able to spend less than Quicken Loans and receive more clicks.

In the report’s analysis section, The Search Monitor’s Finance Team focused on the question of why Quicken Loans paid so much more than LendingTree and NetCredit for fewer clicks.

The Search Monitor concluded its financial SEM analysis by discussing several questions whose answers would help explain the interesting clicks-versus-spend trade-off between the three advertisers. The questions dealt with details about ad copy, where the ads ran in the US, and the role of other marketing channels on SEM spend.
