UM’s Donna Shalala and Patricia White to Lead Dedication Ceremony

Miami (PRWEB) September 05, 2014

University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala and Law School Dean Patricia D. White this week will lead the dedication of the “Hilarie Bass Bricks” in appreciation for the philanthropy of Greenberg Traurig’s Co-President Hilarie Bass. The ceremony takes place at 5 p.m. Friday at the School of Law at 1311 Miller Road, Coral Gables, FL, 33146.

The well-known student “Bricks” area in the heart of the law school quadrangle will be dedicated in honor of Bass and her recent donation to the law school in support of Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami. Bass, who graduated in 1981 first in her class, summa cum laude, and as the Editor of the University of Miami Law Review, has made many other significant donations over the years to the law school and the university, including support for the School of Education and Human Development, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Athletics. She is currently Vice Chair of the UM Board of Trustees, a member of the School of Law’s Visiting Committee and Momentum2 Campaign Committee, and the Campaign Chair for the School of Education and Human Development.

“I am grateful that my success has given me the opportunity to offer my generous support to the institution that played such a vital role in my professional and personal development,” said Bass, who is noted as one of the country’s most distinguished attorneys. “My law school experience includes fond memories of gathering with my classmates at the Bricks. It is my hope that future students who gather there will also leave inspired to find their personal passion and achieve their professional goals.”

Bass said that her contribution also will honor the value of practical experience and training that the law school provides. “Attending law school at the University of Miami was the best decision I ever made. The law school taught me how to solve people’s problems and think on my feet, two important skills that have served me well throughout my career.”

Bass was appointed Co-President of Greenberg Traurig in 2013, a lifetime achievement and testament to her success throughout her 30-plus year career. Based in the firm’s Miami office, she helps chart the course for the multi-practice firm with more than 1,750 attorneys across 36 offices worldwide. She also currently serves on the firm’s Executive Committee and previously served an eight-year term as national chair of Greenberg Traurig’s 600-member litigation department.

Bass has successfully represented high-profile corporate clients in jury and non-jury trials involving hundreds of millions of dollars in controversy. In recognition of that success, she was inducted to The American College of Trial Lawyers. She has worked and settled more than 100 cases, tried more than 20 cases to conclusion, and argued numerous appeals. She has led top legal and community organizations and received numerous prestigious awards and accolades.

She is currently Lead Counsel for the Homebuilder Group in the Chinese Drywall MDL, having served as Lead Liaison counsel in prior MDL’s. In 2011, she completed her term as Chair of the American Bar Association’s 70,000-member Section of Litigation, where (among other projects) she spearheaded the creation of a Task Force on Implicit Bias in the Justice System. Bass is also the former chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Women's Initiative and a prior member of the ABA Commission on Women.
