Amid dozens of files, cardboard cartons and worn down household items, city workers in St. Cloud, Fla. uncovered about 60 pounds of silver in a small home recently demolished.
The inside of the house had looked like something out of A&E’s documentary series “Hoarders,” and the outside looked like an old shack, according to The Blaze.
The city had received many complaints about the home, which was owned by Lamarr LoMax Lowe.
Lowe reportedly abandoned the house sometime last year, after living in it for months without water or running electricity. He had also reportedly had accumulated about half a million dollars in fines for the house, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
While demolishing the former home in April, city workers said they kept hearing metal clanging along the walls during the process.
“It was like a treasure hunt … the more you dug the more you found,” said Melissa Howes, a city employee. “We thought we might be able to keep it like finders keepers, but it was city property.”
The city released information about the silver coins – which date back to the early 1900s – last week.
Silver sells for about $20 an ounce. More than a thousand coins were found at the site. Some guess that the coins are from the Great Depression, and were hidden instead of invested at banks at the time.
Lowe could not be reached for comment.
