Ramon Martinez unlocked the next chapter in his life on Monday with the keys to his new home.
Martinez, who uses a wheelchair, received the keys after he was able to work toward the purchase of the home, thanks to the help of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando.
"It's a whole new future, with a new opportunity to live in my own house," said Martinez.
When he was 18 years old, Martinez was injured in a car accident and lost the ability to walk. Since then, he's always struggled to find a place to live that can meet his needs.
That struggle came to an end Monday.
After more than two years of working hand-in-hand with Habitat for Humanity, Martinez was able to call himself a homeowner for the first time.
"They made everything accessible for the wheelchair and bathrooms really big," said Martinez"
The three-bedroom home on Mozelle Avenue was completely remodeled from the ground up over the past several months.
The home now features a much larger and accessible bathroom, lowered kitchen counter tops and ramps that lead up to the front and side doors.
As his family saw the home for the first time, Martinez said he was grateful for all the work done by volunteers to move him in.
"It's really good," said Martinez. "I didn't think I was going to cry."
Now that he's a homeowner, Martinez plans to continue volunteering his time with Habitat for Humanity. Reported by Click Orlando 8 hours ago.
