James Harden and Dwight Howard look like they’re trying hard to become the most unlikable star duo in the league.
Last week, Howard raised eyebrows when he said the departure of Omar Asik – a young player with big upside – would have no impact on the team.
“It won’t affect us at all,” Howard said.
Keep in mind Howard has made multiple comments in the past downplaying the role of his teammates. After being traded to the Lakers in 2012, he said “my team in Orlando was full of people nobody wanted.”
Then, just weeks later, Howard said this of his new Lakers teammates:
“We have to play like we like eachother. Even if we don’t want to be friends off the court.”
Not exactly team-oriented stuff.
But, as a recent comment by James Harden suggests, Howard might have finally found his perfect teammate. It looks like Harden embraces the same “Me…and oh yeah those other guys on my team” mentality that Howard’s become famous for.
Check out what Harden said about the loss of several key players in Houston this offseason:
“Dwight (Howard) and I are the cornerstones of the Rockets,” Harden said. “The rest of the guys are role players or pieces that complete our team. We’ve lost some pieces and added some pieces. I think we’ll be fine."
Put yourself in the shoes of a star free agent in the league. If you hear comments like this coming from Harden and Howard, why would you ever want to go to Houston?
Rockets GM Daryl Morey has been trying desperately this offseason to bring a third star player to Houston. Sentiments like this from his team do nothing but hurt his chances of doing so.
