The Dallas Mavericks have been busy this offseason. The Mavericks made noise by bringing center Tyson Chandler back to Dallas in a trade with New York. The Mavs also signed restricted free agent Chandler Parsons, who has steadily improved over the past three years with the Houston Rockets.

Recently, Dallas added Rashard Lewis to their lineup. Lewis and the Mavs agreed on a contract for one year that would pay Lewis the veteran’s minimum. However, Lewis’ time with Dallas was short lived. During a physical, it was revealed Lewis would need surgery on his knee.

Lewis played the last two seasons with the Miami Heat, where he won an NBA Championship in 2013. Last season, Lewis averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game while shooting 34.3 percent from beyond the arc. His numbers saw a slight increase during the 2014 NBA Playoffs.

Dallas should have plenty of firepower from a starting lineup that should feature Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis, and Parsons. Lewis would give the Mavs depth in terms of players who can shoot the ball. However, the Mavs voided Lewis’ contract because of his needed surgery.

 The Mavericks are also interested in signing Jameer Nelson for next season. Nelson was a teammate of Lewis when they played together in Orlando, and would fill the role of veteran point guard left by Jose Calderon, who was traded to the New York Knicks. The former member of the Magic is reportedly traveling to Dallas to speak with the team.

The Mavericks already have point guards Devin Harris, Raymond Felton and Gal Mekel on their roster. Harris is expected to be the starter in Dallas next season. Yet, the possibility of Nelson coming to Dallas could mean the departure of either Felton or Mekel.

 Although Lewis would provide decent production off the bench, the Mavericks will be just fine without him. Although not a pressing issue, look for the Mavericks to add another shooter to their roster.
