A female Orange County Corrections officer was severely beaten by a male inmate she was watching at the Orlando Regional Medical Center Wednesday evening.
That corrections officer has been released after being treated for serious facial injuries.
According to the Orange County Jail, Asniel Pino, 26, is now back behind bars. Earlier in the day, police said the inmate complained of a medical problem and was taken to ORMC for treatment. When he got into the patient room, that's when he attacked the corrections officer, said Orlando police.
Pino has been charged with attempted murder on a corrections officer, escape, and resisting arrest with violence, among other charges.
Corrections officers and Orlando Police Department officers were at the hospital most of the evening investigating the violent attack.
OPD said it happened in a patient room on the ninth floor around 5:20 p.m., when she was guarding the inmate alone. OPD said the inmate was partially restrained but he used something inside the room to beat her, causing severe facial injuries.
A witness saw the attack and called for hospital security, who stopped him while he was still beating her, police said.
Corrections officials said the unnamed victim is considered a veteran corrections officer, whose job is to supervise inmates at ORMC.
Corrections officials will conduct an internal investigation to see how the incident happened, but they said "no breach in custody was believed to have occurred." Reported by Click Orlando 6 hours ago.
