Among talks of a new stadium for downtown, Orlando may get a Major League Soccer team as soon as the end of this summer.
Mayor Buddy Dyer told a local sports radio host that the city is hoping to get county funding for a stadium within the next few weeks.
He said a franchise could be awarded during the summer.
"It's the world's most popular sport married with the world's leading tourist destination, so I can't think of a better mix," Dyer said.
Orlando's minor league soccer team, the Lions, could also be seeing some excitement this summer in hosting a U.S. Open Cup semifinal match at the Citrus Bowl in August. Supporters hope this will bring the team, and the sport, more visibility than ever. Reported by Click Orlando 18 hours ago.
